Expressions and their Dutch equivalents
Say what you will, but when it comes to proverbs the great divide between our respective languages doesn't seem nearly as big as we have come to expect.
Yet, we all laugh at the awkward attempts our politicians make when they actually venture into addressing their hosts/guests in what they presume is their native speech.
This page will try to illustrate this in an ever growing number of expressions. Listed are English expressions and their Dutch equivalents. Sometimes they are very similar, sometimes they aren't alike at all.

Japans Engels Nederlands autowoordenboek
Vanuit zijn werk bij Toyota kwam mijn vader steeds vaker in contact met het Japanse idee van Engels spreken. In verschillende contacten met Japanners en de laatste jaren liep hij in verband met vertalingen tegen verschillende varianten van woorden aan die zich niet lekker lieten vertalen. Het irriteerde hem dat deze woorden in geen enkel woordenboek voorkwamen. Dus begon hij zijn eigen woordenboek samen te stellen. Natuurlijk zijn er weinig uitgevers geïnteresseerd in het uitgeven van een boek met zo'n beperkt potentieel lezerspubliek. Welcome to the Internet!

Bargoens voor beginners
Volgens Van Dale is het Bargoens de "geheimtaal van onderwereldfiguren e.d. => argot, boeventaal, dieventaal".
Die omschrijving mag adequaat heten als het om de oorsprong van het Bargoens gaat, maar zij is dat al lang niet meer als we kijken naar het hedendaagse gebruik ervan: de padvinder die een "heitje" vraagt voor zijn karweitje, en de zakenman die net een "geinig" autootje heeft gekocht, behoren m.i. toch niet noodzakelijkerwijze tot het dievengilde...
Diverse woorden uit het Bargoens zijn dan ook in de loop van de tijd overgenomen door "gewone" sprekers van het ABN.
